At De Willem…

Semi-nude body of overseas-based pensioner found dead in home
– piece of cloth wrapped around her neck, tongue  cut out
– son-in-law in custody
THE body of 66-year-old Bebe Jahooral Banu was discovered by her son-in-law, ‘Ali’, in a room in the lower flat of her De Willem, West Coast Demerara home at around 15:00hrs on Sunday, nude and with a piece of cloth wrapped around her neck.
The woman’s sister-in-law disclosed that they had received a phone call at around the same time of the discovery, informing them of the tragedy.
“We got the message like three o clock. She lived here with her tenants and her son-in-law. When we came, the police (were) here (and) there was a crowd outside,” she related.
The woman said relatives were told it is suspected that the deceased was raped and then killed.
“When they found her (in) the apartment at the bottom of the house, we saw that they (had) cut her throat. Her tongue was cut out, and the top she had been wearing was wrapped around her neck,” she said.
According to one man from the area, it looked as if the woman was dragged into the room, since her dentures had been found under the house leading into the room.
While the motive for the killing is still unclear, police investigations are ongoing. Neighbours were unaware of any suspicious action by any of the community members. They described the woman as a very nice person who was always giving and loving.
Police have detained the woman’s son-in-law ‘Ali’ (only name given) for questioning.
Bebe Jahooral Banu was an overseas-based Guyanese who, along with her brother and sister-in-law had been in the country for some six weeks prior to her demise.  Her brother and sister-in-law are staying in a neighbouring village.
