– irate driver breaks photographer’s camera
AMAZINGLY, no one was injured when a speeding Kitty/Campbellville (Route 40) minibus, BMM 9294, which was said to be ‘racing’ with another minibus, ended up in a trench outside the Botanical Gardens on Vlissengen Road, around 20:45hrs last night. According to the driver of the minibus, who declined to give his name, he was heading towards the bus park when his vehicle was braced by another minibus which caused his bus to lose control and skid on the wet road. As he related: “The man jam me and all I could do was grab the steering wheel and try to steer”. He did not get the licence plate number of the other vehicle but confirmed that it was another route 40 minibus.
Accounts of the number of persons the bus was carrying varied with the driver saying it was eight but with at least one bystander saying it was 16 or more.
Eyewitnesses also said the minibus was ‘racing’ with another Route 40 bus, when the accident occurred.
Meanwhile, Chronicle’s Chief Photographer Mr. Cullen Bess-Nelson, who arrived on the scene a few minutes after the incident, was attacked by the minibus driver who scrambled his camera, damaging it in the process.
The driver apparently panicked when Nelson snapped his photo and a fracas ensued with some other persons on the scene inviting themselves in the excitement. The police was called in, but by that time the driver had reportedly fled the scene.
