TWENTY-TWO-YEAR-OLD Naresh Khemraj Seenauth lost his life on the Mon Repos Public Road on December 25 at about 01:25 hrs when he attempted to cross the road in front of his workplace, the Imran General Hardware Store, located at Mon Repos Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara. According to a police report, investigations have so far revealed that the driver of motor car PKK 9011 was proceeding at a fast rate when Naresh Seenauth was struck down as he attempted to cross the road. The police report said Naresh was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital, and that the driver of the motor vehicle was found to be over the legal limit of alcohol consumption when tested with the breathalyzer. He is in police custody assisting with the investigations.
Naresh Seenauth’s half-sister, Shanta Seenauth, told the Chronicle yesterday that an employee of Imran General Hardware Store went to their home and broke the news of the incident, at around 02:00hrs on Christmas Day.
She said she and other relatives went out to the public road and saw the lifeless body of Naresh.
According to Shanta, the vehicle dragged her brother’s body as far as to Agriculture Road, Mon Repos. Consequently her brother sustained severe injuries to his face and neck, and looked as though he had broken every bone in his body.
Shanta said Naresh will be buried today, and because he was such an asset at his workplace, his boss has decided to stand all funeral expenses. The boss reportedly told the family that Naresh will be missed for his industriousness.
Naresh Seenauth was described as a very hard-working individual who was very helpful to everyone, including his boss. He hailed from Berbice, but resided in Pigeon Island Squatting Area, Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara for quite some time prior to his demise.
In light of the prevalence of road accidents and fatalities, Acting Traffic Chief, Senior Superintendent Brian Joseph said earlier this year, that speeding, inattentiveness and drunk driving are the leading causes of road accidents, and he advised all road users to desist from these practises.
