BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) – Amateur champion Anderson Emmanuel was remanded on Monday after he appeared in court charged with committing robbery. The 26-year-old heavyweight champion, the 2006 Sports Personality-of-the-Year, was not allowed to enter a plea to the indictable charge for stealing close to US$8 000 in jewellery and US$1 500 in cash last July.
Emmanuel, a Commonwealth, Pan Am and CAC medallist, sobbed loudly and protested his innocence before he was led away to be taken to the Dodds Prison.
“I don’t want to go to jail, I ain’t do nothing. .I done boxing,” were his final words before being escorted away by a police officer, watched by his wailing wife.
Magistrate Graveney Bannister denied him bail, after the prosecution argued that the offence was of a serious nature, Emmanuel had recently been taken into police custody, another person was being sought in the matter, he would interfere with the virtual complainant, and might not turn up for the trial.
Emmanuel returns to court on January 17 when his case will be heard.
