THE President appears to be doing two important things right away-proceeding with his agenda, while actively engaging the opposition. This approach is based on the lesson from the elections. The PPP/C has the right to form the government with the most seats, but also the responsibility to recognise that the combined opposition have the majority in the legislature. The President’s non-confrontational and more accommodating manner helps to move the opposition’s possible tendency to spend more time in investigating and stopping past and new government programmes and more on addressing what could be done to make them better.
The opposition and the new government have a joint responsibility to make all actions or projects old or new fully transparent and free of any aspect that is corrupt or incompetent or unfair. On the other hand, the opposition, especially the AFC, must resist any temptation of over- reaching with too many investigations due to old animosities between old PNC and PPP factions. Fact-based investigations -YES, witch hunts – NO. The opposition must show that they have the capacity to govern and not only oppose. On the other hand, the government must show that they can listen and respond to the opposition’s legitimate questions and demands, showing a willingness to be inclusive where it is justified and resistant when not. Ultimately, it is the people that must decide what seems best for them. Guyana needs national leaders, not party leaders.
