Telecommunication Solution charges ex-employees with $48M embezzlement

THREE former employers of Telecommunication Solution Guyana Inc. appeared in court yesterday, charged with embezzling $48M from the company.
Melissa Naughton, Oladaia Christian and Candace Marshall (no addresses given) made their appearance before Acting Chief Magistrate
Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on a joint indictable charge, which said, between June 25, 2008 and November 23, 2009, they fraudulently conspired together, with each other and persons unknown, to embezzle the sum in credit from the firm.
Naughton and Christian faced an additional allegation that, between the same dates, being clerks or servants of the enterprise, they fraudulently embezzled the amount in credit, taken by them in the name and on the account of their employer.
Police Sergeant, Lionel Harvey, prosecuting, said Naughton and Christian were cashiers attached to Digicel, responsible for the sales of large amounts of credit and the process is done through computerised systems.
The prosecutor said, during the period 2008 to 2009, they invalidated a number of air time transactions and, subsequently, revalidated those which were sold to persons and took the proceeds for themselves.
The prosecutor said investigations revealed that the money for the sales, which were solicited by Marshall for the other two accused, never went into the company’s account.
Defence Counsel, Gordon Gilhuys, Adrian Thompson and Shellon Boyce represented the trio and requested reasonable bail, which was fixed at $500,000 each for Naughton and Christian and $250,000 for Marshall.
They will return to court on January 10, 2012
