Wins for Fruta Conquerors, Sunburst Camptown on opening night
WITH Courtney Benn Constructing Company Ltd (CBCCL) donating G$1M to the prize money for the GFA Banks Beer football festival, Georgetown clubs have been presented with a golden opportunity to play exciting football to get to the last four places and to earn a bright Christmas.
The opening of the tournament at the GFC ground on Sunday afternoon saw a keenly contested match between two youthful, blended clubs affiliated to the GFA – Guyana Police Force and Fruta Conquerors. Watched by a large crowd, the Tucville side beat the lawmen 2-0 to earn their place in the next round.
The match was keenly contested with both teams showing their skills and pattern of play which entertained the spectators.
Ace forward Pernel Schultz in the 22nd minute opened the account for Fruta Conquerors with a superb shot on Police goalkeeper Tyrone Abrams who failed to do corrective duties.
The score remained the same at the end of the half and on resumption the lawmen were revived. However they failed to convert their goal-scoring opportunities to equalise or take the lead.
Dwayne Lawrence, who sealed the bid for a second round place for the Fruta guys, was on target in the 63rd minute when he easily got the ball past the Police custodian to score.
In the supporting game, Northern Rangers, current GFA President Beer league leaders, held out Sunburst Camptown to regular time as their physical condition failed, allowing the experienced side to win 2-0. Former national forward Peter Parks and Lancelot Raulston were the goalscorers for Camptown.
The tournament continues tomorrow with Alpha United facing Charlestown United and at 20.00hrs Beacon match skills with Flamingo.
At stake is the Banks Beer Knockout Cup and G$3M for the winners while the runners-up will receive G$1.5M and a trophy.
Banks DIH Ltd, McNeal Promotions and CBCCL are sponsors of the festival.
