REDjet flying to St. Lucia this Christmas
REDjet, the Caribbean’s first low fares airline, has announced that it will be flying to St. Lucia this Christmas, as it continues to extend its services across the region.
The carrier will, officially, start flying to St. Lucia’s Hewannorra International Airport, from Friday December 16, with fares beginning at US$9.99, making that destination the seventh port of call since REDjet introduction, in April this year.
At REDjet’s launching ceremony, its Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr. Ian Burns announced that it would see extension across the region, in keeping with its primary aim to increase air travel to Guyana, at affordable prices.
The airline was initially set to commence flights to three destinations, Barbados, Trinidad and Jamaica. Since that time, however, REDjet has initiated flights between Guyana and Antigua, in September of this year.
While announcing the Antigua route, Burns stated that the airline was targeting even greater expansion, with the addition of more aircrafts to its fleet.
“We are making a US$6M investment and are about to sign an agreement with a leasing company in the United States to bring on board four aircraft, over the next 12 to 15 months,” he explained.
This addition of MD-82 planes will bring REDjet’s fleet up to six and is expected to strengthen the airline’s ability to provide a more efficient and reliable service to customers.
Another advantage of this addition is that it will provide opportunities for employment within the destinations, Burns noted.
He said: “We will continue to see new routes, 150 jobs will be created from this, in addition to a huge amount of indirect jobs added to the economy of the destinations.”
Burns said, too, that plans are also underway for the commencement of flights from Barbados and St. Lucia to Panama and even more destinations will be integrated into the flight schedule.
REDjet was officially introduced to Guyana in April this year and its inaugural commercial flight arrived at Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), Timehri, from Barbados on May 10, 2011 with 149 passengers on board, including top REDjet officials and representatives of the Barbadian Government.
Customers can now make reservations on www.flyREDjet.com or via REDjet’s Call Centres, in St. Lucia at 724-5538(5-JET) or at Going Places locations. (C. Singh)
