MANY people on the Essequibo Coast and Pomeroon are overjoyed at the announcement by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) that the ruling People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) won Monday’s elections. As thousands of them waited anxiously from 14:00 hrs near radios and television sets to listen to the GECOM press conference, the atmosphere was one of quietness, calm and peace.
When GECOM Chief Elections Officer, Mr. Gocool Boodhoo announced PPP/C as the winner, the faces of Essequibians immediately changed to smiles, laughter and happiness and an air of celebration, joy, love, togetherness and brotherhood was obvious in the ‘Cinderella County.’
The Guyana Chronicle spoke to two persons who gave their views about the PPP/C victory.
Eighteen-year-old second-year Anna Regina Guyana School of Agriculture (GSA) student, Rebecca Prabhulall, said she is very happy that the PPP/C has won, as she had voted for that party.
She said, as a young person, she is looking forward to the discovery and exploration of oil in the country, the new Linden to Lethem super highway, the bridge across the Corentyne River, the deep water harbour and the commissioning of the hydropower station within the next five years.
Another voter, Pooran Persaud who was a PPP/C candidate, also welcomed the victory and lauded the party on the massive development that has taken place across the region during the past 19 years.
According to Persaud, the PPP/C victory demonstrates the unity of Essequibians who want to see development continue in all sectors under the ruling party.
