THE annual Geddes Grant/Seven Seas National Chess Championship, which is organised by the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) and is hosted at the Ocean Spray Hotel in Kitty, continues today with another four rounds of mind boggling matches. According to reports from the Federation, the event has passed the halfway mark with the defending Senior Chess Champion Taffin Khan unbeaten after eight rounds. Khan has six more matches to contest in his pursuit to retain the title.
In what can be considered a repeat performance on his way to the junior title in 2008 in which he won all his games, he remains in top form. This past Sunday his dominance reigned as neither of his opponents recorded even a single draw in their encounters with him.
Among the eight players Khan disposed of were four promising juniors while he accumulated eight points at the top of the table.
Following him was Maria Thomas – six, Frankie Farley – five and a half and Glenford Corlette – three points.
The scores for the four junior players are: Anthony Drayton – four and a half points, Saeed Ali – three, Rashad Hussain – one and a half and Suhai Feng – half a point. Hussain and Feng were absent following the resumption of the championship last weekend and their absence affected their scores significantly.
