APNU Berbice supporters picket GECOM, RDC offices

THE New Amsterdam supporters of A partnership for National Unity [APNU] yesterday took to the streets of the Berbice township where they staged a peaceful picket challenging the Guyana Elections Commission to recheck the statements of poll. The group, just under a hundred, converged on the Regional Democratic Council offices and GECOM’s office on Princess Elizabeth Street, where they carried several placards highlighting their concerns.
Among the posters were ‘We want statement of poll verification’ and ‘we need to be heard’. In an invited comment, APNU Regional campaign manager, John Austin, told reporters that the local body was informed from the party’s headquarters in Georgetown that APNU had won the elections outright.
‘Consequently, we are asking that GECOM do a statement of poll by statement of poll rechecking of the election results, since a large portion of South Georgetown votes were not included in the results that GECOM declared.’
Austin told the Berbice media that the picketing exercise, along with other legal activities as seem necessary, will continue, until a conclusion is reached.
The picketers, who attracted several police ranks, dispersed shortly after 16:00hrs
