THE Guyana Police Force (GPF) yesterday appealed to members of the public to be more responsible and stop posting on websites, information, that can incite persons to violence or make inflammatory statements which may have the same effect.
The appeal followed several postings on the social network, Facebook, which had misleading facts about the just concluded elections and caused Guyanese to panic on Wednesday, as they awaited the results of the polls.
The GPF also urged people to obey the laws of this country.
On Wednesday, supporters of A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) staged a motorcade through the city without police permission, in clear breach of the law.
The GPF said, although it exercised some patience and tolerance over the occurrence, that sort of illegal procession will not be tolerated.
A statement said the GPF wished to categorically state that it expects leaders and supporters of political parties to act responsibly and urge them to act lawfully, lest they put themselves at risk of a condign response from the Force.
The police said it was stated, on a Facebook Page attributed to a member of a political party on Wednesday, November 30, that police escorted Dr. Rupert Roopnarine to Congress Place, Sophia, from CNS television Channel Six in Robb Street, Georgetown.
The publication also indicated that men were at Freedom House armed with sniper rifles within sight of the public.
The GPF stated that it responded to a report, made by the Chief of Staff of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), that he had received a call which said that Prime Ministerial Candidate Roopnarine was uncomfortable and afraid to leave Channel Six, where he was making a presentation, due to some elements, who, he was told, were outside of Channel Six.
The police went to the scene, where they saw a few persons gathered on both sides of the pavement, chanting ‘Granger, Granger; no place for Ramotar’.
Subsequently, a few men arrived and, shortly after, Roopnarine emerged and entered his vehicle. Some of the men entered his vehicle with him and the others joined two other vehicles which were behind Roopnarine’s. They, then, drove off and the police followed them to the entrance of Congress Place and left the area.
The police said they never received any report of sniper nor saw any snipers around Freedom House.
