APNU supporters march through the city

…to be addressed by Granger at Square of the Revolution today
HUNDREDS of APNU (A Party for National Unity) supporters yesterday afternoon marched from Sophia to
Parliament Buildings, loudly chanting pro-APNU slogans, in protest against the results of the November 28 general and regional elections.

The pro-APNU band, registering strong support for their leader, David Granger, chanted “We want David Granger!”

The crowd reportedly protested peacefully, obeying the orders of the police all along the way.

The protest action started around 18:00 hrs, with supporters moving west along Duncan Street, turning south into Vlissengen Road, then west along Brickdam, eventually converging in their numbers on Parliament Buildings in downtown Georgetown.

At Parliament Buildings, gates to the compound were tightly secured with dozens of policemen posted at strategic points both inside and around the compound, and keeping the crowd at bay. Meanwhile, inside Parliament Buildings, the leaders of the parties which had contested the elections gathered peacefully and discussed their business without interruption.

After some time, the crowd moved on to the Square of the Revolution on Vlissengen Road where they were briefly addressed by their leader, David Granger.   Granger told them to keep calm and advised them to return to the Square at 10:00 hrs today to be briefed on the course of action being pursued by the party for a resolution of APNU’s grouse with the Elections Commission.
The crowd dispersed shortly afterwards.

Truck loads of heavily armed policemen maintained a visible presence in the streets throughout and even after the demonstration.
