– PPP/C remains in lead
THREE days after Guyanese voted to elect a new government, the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) failed to make a declaration. The Commission was due to announce the winner last evening at a media briefing which was later cancelled. Reports reaching this publication said the press conference will now be held sometime this morning. While the full results are yet to be revealed, as at 11:00 hrs last night, the incumbent People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) was in the lead in both the General and Regional Elections, with 128,911 and 128,623 votes respectively.
In the general elections, the party is also leading in Regions 1 with 2,736 votes, 2 with 12,087, 3 with 29,682, 5 with 11,206, 6 with 18,342 and Region 9 with 3,623.
Opposition coalition, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) up to news time had a tabulated amount of 105,710 votes in the general elections and 103,002 in the regional elections.
This group is leading the general elections in Region 4 with 59,381 votes, Region 7 with 1,654, and in Region 10 the APNU continues to lead with 10,989 votes.
These regions are traditionally won by the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) – a major member in the newly formed group, APNU.
Also up to press time last night, the Alliance for Change (AFC) has 26,701 votes so far in the General Elections and 27,498 in the regional elections.
This party is leading in Region 8 with 975 votes. In Region 4, the AFC managed to secure 7, 640 votes in the general election.
This party has already surpassed the amount of votes it received in the 2006 national elections, which gave it five seats in the Ninth Parliament.
The United Force is doing badly and has not even managed to rake in as much as one thousand votes in the General Elections. However, up to press time, it had gotten 1,081 votes in the regional elections.
In Region 4, it secured a mere 132 in the general elections and in the regional elections, the party which changed leadership teams just before the polls, got 299 votes.
The East Berbice Development Association is contesting regional elections in Region 6 and has gotten 105 votes so far.
In spite of the total results not yet being available, statistics presented so far show an increase in cross-over votes in certain traditional strongholds of the PPP and the PNC/R, now APNU. This could be interpreted as a shift in race based politics.
