… Tourney paused due to general elections
THE round robin stage of the Guinness ‘Greatest in Da Street’ wrapped up with an exciting night of action at the East Riumveldt Community Centre last Saturday night.
Unfortunately, the organisers have decided to put the tournament on pause due to Guyana’s upcoming General Elections on Monday and are hoping to resume shortly after it has concluded. Cash prizes went to all the teams for their participation as the eight groups which consisted of four teams each received $30 000 for the group winners, $25 000 for the runners-up while the third- and fourth-place finishers pocketed $20 000 and $15 000, respectively.
The 16 teams that made it into the knock-out round are: Alexander Village, North-Last Entrance, East Front Road, Hope Street Tiger Bay, Globe Yard, Lodge Housing Scheme, D’Urban Street, Broad Street, West Back Road, Albouystown B, BV, Charlestown, West Front Road, Back Circle, Queen Street Tiger Bay and Island Allstar.
On Saturday night Buxton, Laing Avenue, Charlestown and Albouystown A all scored 2-1 victories over East Ruimveldt, D’Urban Street, Norton Street and BV respectively.
In other entertaining showdowns Alexander Village defeated Kingston 5-3, Albouystown B got past Costello Housing Scheme 3-1, Globe Yard defeated Festival City 3-2 and West Back Road played to a 2-2 draw with Leopold Street.
In the opening match of the night Alexander Village’s Sheldon Gravesande produced a stunning hat-trick as he scored in the first, sixth and 23rd minutes with support from his teammate Shem Porter, against Kingston.
Kingston were piloted by a hat-trick scored by Nigel Denny (10th, 13th and 22nd) but he had no support from his teammates, leading to their eventual defeat.
In the Globe Yard/Festival City showdown there was a similar scenario. For the eventual victors Jermain Grimes (11th and 19th) racked up a double with support from his team mate Anthony France (23rd) while the opposition had goals from Odell Williams (17th and 25th minutes)..
