Six months jail for theft of surveillance cameras

DEXTER Grant (no address given) was sentenced to six months imprisonment yesterday, after he admitted stealing three surveillance cameras. He appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and pleaded guilty to the offence, particulars of which said, on November 20, he stole the cameras, valued $30,000, property of Rawle Roberts.
The prisoner told the court he had taken his bicycle to a workshop and did not have enough money to pay for its repair, so he took the cameras, sold them and used the proceeds for that purpose.
His mother, who was present, offered to compensate the virtual complainant and handed over $30,000 but the sentence was still imposed on the convict.
The magistrate said she considered the inconvenience caused by Grant and his brazen theft of the cameras placed to secure the premises of the owner.
