– urge supporters to work towards peaceful conduct of general and regional elections
PRESIDENTIAL Candidate of A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), Mr. David Granger has denounced any form of incitement and violence while calling on supporters to work towards the peaceful conduct of general and regional elections. In a statement yesterday, he said, in keeping with the Code of Conduct for Political Parties that forbids “the use of abusive, slanderous or threatening language,” supporters should not give in to comments made by those in other political parties.
“APNU also calls on its supporters not to be drawn into physical confrontations, especially with violent agents of the People’s Progressive Party,” the retired Army Commander appealed.
He also accused supporters of the ruling PPP/C of being involved in “defacing, damaging and destroying APNU’s posters, flags and other election material around the country.”
The opposition coalition also called on the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) to remain vigilant to ensure that signatories to the Code of Conduct do not commit further breaches.
“We call, also, on members of the Guyana Police Force to continue to act in a professional manner, to prevent breaches of the peace and to bring persons who commit crimes to justice during the election campaign,” Granger said.
Meanwhile, the Alliance For Change (AFC) urged Guyanese to observe a day of prayer and fasting on Sunday as the nation approaches election day.
Dr. Sewnauth Poonalall said it is important for citizens to preserve the peace across the country.
“We, therefore, call upon every Guyanese to strive to be in inner peace with ourselves, to be in outward peace with each other and above all upward peace with Almighty God,” he said, explaining that this three-fold peace can only come through prayer and fasting.
“Nothing has been more clearly demonstrated in the history of the world than that prayer and fasting has accomplished great and valuable purposes,” Poonalall maintained.
He said he believes that this spiritual exercise, expressed by most religions, is critical so that Guyana can be blessed with a “government of God’s choosing.”
