PPP/C offers Guyana future built on today’s successes
PRESIDENT Bharrat Jagdeo told thousands attending a People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) rally, at Bath, West Coast Berbice last Sunday, that the party has a clear vision for the future, that will be built on the successes of today. “Our Party has a vision and we work hard every single day to change Guyana…Donald Ramotar has the vision and skills to run this country,” he asserted.
Mr. Jagdeo said the PPP/C has rebuilt Guyana, transformed the nation from what it was and brought it to a point where Guyanese can boast a free country, a stable economy and massive investments that will propel Guyana forward, at a time when the world is plagued by a financial crisis.
“We have brought Guyana from when there was no money in the Central Bank to now close to US$1billion sitting in that same Bank,” he stated.
He said Government has paid back approximately US$1.7billion in debt and, today, only four per cent of the country’s revenue goes towards the repayment of debt (lowest in CARICOM), while the rest goes towards nation building.
The President pointed out that the exchange rate remains stable and there have been significant reductions in the fiscal deficit and inflation rate, all of which occurred while the country expanded expenditure, as well as the revenue base.
“The best years are yet to come and a Donald Ramotar-led Government will make this a reality,” he forecast.
Jagdeo said major investments will continue to be made in drainage and irrigation, citing the G$3billion Hope Canal, which would, significantly, improve D&I when completed.
He noted that the Opposition was not supportive of the project, calling it “a waste of money” but he maintained that the PPP/C is committed to meeting the needs of farmers and all Guyanese.
“This is Cheddi Jagan’s legacy and we are looking towards a brighter future,” Jagdeo posited.
He declared that the Alliance for Change (AFC) and A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) are becoming more desperate, because they stand to face a massive defeat, by the (PPP/C) in the next elections.
Jagdeo said, in spite of the many challenges, the PPP/C has a vision to bring further changes to Guyana and the Guyanese people.
He reiterated that vision, foresight and ability are what it takes to move a country, qualities that the PPP/C has proven to possess.
“Do not squander this opportunity. You matter in Guyana; there was a time when you did not,” the President remarked.
BLATANT LIES
Mr. John Silas, who said he was with ex-party member, Mr. Moses Nagamootoo and Dr. Cheddi Jagan when Nagamootoo claimed Dr. Jagan promised him the next presidency, debunked this as blatant lies.
Silas emphasised that no such promise was made and any other “truth” is a figment of Nagamootoo’s imagination.
Nagamootoo has also alleged that he was promised the vice-presidency by the Head of State and former President, Mrs. Janet Jagan and that, too, was denied by Silas.
Also taking to the platform was PPP/C member and former Human Services Minister, Ms. Indra Chandarpal, who said the incumbent party is not afraid of a struggle.
She attested that the PPP/C has fought and fulfilled the promises made to the Guyanese people.
“We lived up to the promise of every election and are poised to continue to greater heights,” Chandarpal said.
According to her, the PPP/C victory in 1992 removed hopelessness for many Guyanese and brought democracy to Guyana.
“Transformation is happening all across our country,” she said.
Region 5 (Mahaica/Berbice) Chairman, Mr. Harrinarine Baldeo called on the gathering to stand with the PPP/C and allow progress in the region to continue.
Other speakers at the rally included Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Ms. Priya Manickchand; Minister in the Ministry of Finance, Ms. Jennifer Webster; and General Manager of the Mahaica/Mahaicony/Abary/Agricultural Development Authority (MMA/ADA), Mr. Aubrey Charles.
