MARIA Thomas played unbeaten to win the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) Smartparts Senior National Chess Qualifier which concluded last weekend at the Keishar’s Sports Club. Thomas secured seven wins and a draw against Frankie Farley in the final round of the tournament which saw the junior players create a few upsets as four of them qualified for the championship.
They are Rashad Hussain, Saeed Ali, Anthony Drayton and Junior Champion Haifeng Su; the defeated senior players Shiv Nandalall, David Khan, Alex Joseph and Roy Sharma, in their quest to take on reigning senior champion Taffin Khan.
The final points standing for the top seven players: Maria Thomas – 7½; Frankie Farley, Rashad Hussain and Saeed Ali all scored 5½; Anthony Drayton, Sue Hai Feng and Glenford Corlette finished on 5 points each.
