History was created in Guyana on October 30th, when the 7 billionth child was born in Guyana. The international recognition, good fortune and importance are even recognised by the United Nations. It is the intention of the United Nations in Guyana to visit the hospital and award and recognise the child and mother.
Some may ask why I look upon this as divine. I say to them that every child, every birth, is a divine sanction and a blessing to the universe for the production of life. It is a blessing of the holy womb that produces that newborn. But in this special case, the 7 billionth person in the universe was born in Guyana. To me, this is a sign of more greatness to come.
What else makes us Guyanese great? Consider these: We comprise numerous religions living side by side, with churches and mosques and religious cloisters living and enjoying each other’s religion and love; and that we have six races living together, supporting, inter-marrying, and enjoying life as a people. We are free from political control and dogma and are free to elect a government. We have a government that is not dictatorial, but is democratically elected with respect to all segments of our society, even those that voted against it. Our system and constitution ensure this, and this is indeed a significant blessing; and I believe any government of the day would serve its people in the same way.
We have a government that recognises children born to single parents, and gives opportunities to single parents. But, at the same time, I do not want them to think we will reward immoral behaviour. It is a fact that our government gives opportunities to those who dropped out of school, even second and third chances. Our government provides loans for students to attend the University of Guyana. The government gives a pension to all who are citizens of the nation, even if they are collecting another pension. We have a government that gives uniforms to students (unheard of anywhere else); a government that gives free medical care to its citizens, with medical outreach programmes and financial assistance to those who need foreign treatment.
We have a professional judiciary that is free from political control. Our police force is a professional one, free from political control; but, like the armed forces, they must respect the rule of law and be guided and instructed by the government of the day.
In our beloved Guyana, government has provided shelters for the pavement dwellers, but respects their democratic right to choose to leave these shelters if they wish. And as free men and women, citizens as they wish, some preferring the freedom of living in the streets. It is the same for street children. At times, the government will pick them up, feed them, clean them, and medically treat them. For those not wanting to abide under rules, feeding and care centres called ‘Drop-in Centres’ have been created throughout the country. The government has established new hostels for the benefit of Amerindians, and special schools and dorms with enormous opportunities for our Amerindian citizens.
The government makes it possible for the people to get free house lots, with a small contribution for infrastructure, each according to their financial ability. Even with easy access to construction finance.
Seawalls are built to keep out flood waters. Roads are constructed in almost every village and town, even the most remote (of course with the exception of Atlantic Gardens, where only the main entrance road has been built, and we suffer for almost 30 years without any good road), in all villages, success in roads and water can be seen. In moments of crises, no matter how small, the government reacts with efficiency and care to help its citizens, as we saw in Lethem recently. Imagine what government would do for the big crises.
In our country unemployment is so little that we now have to import labour to enhance our work force. Those who do not have work are the lazy ones and opportunists, looking for freeness. In our country, we can grow food all year round, and our soil is so rich that we can just throw some seeds and let nature water and care for them, and people can enjoy harvesting fruits and vegetables, like okra, boras, and other beans. Coconuts and mangoes grow perennially.
Oh, our fresh water is abundant; the world will crave our fresh water and import from us soon. Our sand and earth are blessed, and are already being imported by others, making business for smart Guyanese. Even our dust, our sand, is valuable…..imagine that!! Our fresh water fish and valuables are tremendous. Words cannot describe our salt water resources and abundance of food that come from them. Our jungles breathe life into the universe, saving the earth from destruction. Our mineral resources in bauxite, gold, diamonds, manganese, uranium, and now oil and more to come will enrich our country and our lives.
As a professional I always support the government of the day, and I am free to vote for whom I wish to see rule the country. These are some of the reasons why I see Guyana as great, and becoming greater in time. And the birth of this seven billionth child in Guyana is such a sign.
God bless Guyana. Politicians and their flocks are prone to misbehave. Those that are discreet and open, be careful, watch yourselves. Do not mess with our blessings and greatness. Read the above again … please!
