Victory Valley Royals 2012 Schools’ Championship gets early boost

… Haynes Foundation to outfit participating schools
THE Haynes Foundation Inc. which has been in the forefront of contributing to Guyana’s basketball over the last five years, is once again making its presence felt with a significant donation to the 2012 Victory Valley Royals (VVR) schools basketball championship for secondary schools in the mining town of Linden.

Based in New Jersey, USA, the non-profit organisation will provide a total of 70 players T-Shirts that will be worn by the seven participating schools, along with four basketballs, a release from the Foundation said.
Due to recent upgrade of the Mackenzie Sports Club hard court which has been the home of the championships since its inception, the Victory Valley Royals basketball club has renewed energy for their 2012 staging and the donation from Haynes Foundation is exactly what’s needed to come out of the gate.
The Victory Valley Royals Schools’ Basketball Championship, first bounced off in 2005 and is known as the hallmark of Schools basketball for all the schools in Linden.
Former junior national captain, Akeem ‘The Dream’ Kanhai, along with Orin ‘Six-Head’ Rose are both multiple winners of the Championship and Most Valuable Player (MVP) award trophies and the two have paved the way for the likes of Marlon Pollydore, Geoffrey La Rose, Dwight McKinnon and Linden Fraser, all of whom would’ve not only excelled at the Championships, but would go out to represent Guyana at the Inter Guiana Games (IGG) level.
Javon Nelson, Roderick Alphonso and Kerwin Williams were also MVP winners before.
Haynes Foundation and its board members, according to the release, are of the belief that the VVR Schools Basketball Championship not only provides a basketball tournament to the Linden community, but also offers a creative outlet for physical activities, team work and discipline through sports.
“This is by far one of the few basketball championships in Guyana where the sport is competed for trophies and pride and not cash prizes and we will always support such efforts.”  Haynes Foundation president stated.
A date for the championship is still to be decided on but it is most likely to be played in cohesion with the Linden Town Week celebration.
