Driver in accident seeking to evade prosecution

THREE-year-old Ashley Mc Kenzie was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital yesterday to receive medical attention for head injuries she sustained when the motorcycle on which she was a pillion encountered an accident a few corners away from her home.

According to her father, John McKenzie, who resides at 67 Costello Housing Scheme West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, he was taking the child to her school and her mother, Lekha McKenzie, to her workplace at the time of the incident.

Explaining the circumstances that attended the mishap, John Mc Kenzie related: “I was going north on Vlissengen Road, this guy was on the eastern half, travelling south, and then he made a sudden right turn to go on Sussex Street; and he told me that he never saw me …but it appeared to me that he was texting.”
He said the man was about to leave the scene of the accident, but he told the man to take the infant and her mother to the hospital to be treated, after it was evident that the child was in need of urgent attention.

He said: “After he took my wife and Ashley to the hospital, he was leaving, (but) the people at the hospital told him that he (could not) leave until everything was sorted out. But he told them that he had to go back and get the father, that’s me,” Mc Kenzie said.

The other man involved in the accident was driving a yellow taxi, HB 4993. He left the hospital and did not return, as he had already planned a strategy for his escape.

“We are still awaiting results from a (CT) scan to determine if she is stable or if there is a need for further and higher medical attention,” Ashley’s parents explained.

According to Mr. and Mrs. Mc Kenzie, the police have begun investigating the accident and are to contact the Licence Revenue Office to cull the information that would enable them to contact the driver of the motor vehicle.

The Mc Kenzies are calling for the relevant authorities to act quickly to find and prosecute the vehicle driver.

They are asking anyone knowing the whereabouts of the man to make urgent contact with the nearest police station.
