Schools, churches awarded for helping to sensitise disabled

UNITED Action for Differently Abled Persons has awarded seven schools and six churches for participating in its six- month programme of sensitisation, under the Disability Act, which was funded by Voluntary Services Overseas (VSO). The awards ceremony was held last Thursday, in the boardroom of the National Commission on Disability (NCD) at Lot 49 Croal Street, Stabroek, Georgetown, where representatives of the schools and churches were presented certificates of participation by chairman of the awarding organisation, Ms. Simone Poole.
She said the sensitisation process started six months ago and included television and radio programmes on the rights of persons with disabilities.
Poole said it was a learning experience in which schools, among other places were made aware of the rights of the target group and urged school teachers to continue lending support by ensuring children know about the Disability Act.
“If persons with disability are around you, you should allow them to do things for themselves. Disabled persons like to try but, if they do need help, only then you must assist,” she advised.
Poole said the course was a success but wished they had more time to go through the related legislation.
Present at the function, as well, was VSO Programme Manager (Disability) Tara Persaud.
