Diwali brings people together-PM at GPL cultural programme

THE Guyana Power and Light (GPL) on Friday held its annual Diwali cultural programme which showcased classical, tarana, safi and bangra dances, tassa, badam and tadja drumming. Prime Minister Samuel Hinds in his feature address said the event is one that brings people together as they join the Hindu community in celebrating Diwali.
Hinds, freshly adorned with the Order of Excellence award, graced the event with his wife, Mrs. Yvonne Hinds, who was awarded the Medal of Service on Friday, told the gathering that Diwali is indeed a signal celebration where good prevails over evil.

He added that the event not only reminds us of our culture, but also develops relationships – a common feeling about being Guyanese as we celebrate Diwali signalling the year is coming to an end with the festive season of Christmas approaching.
The Prime Minister stated that with the upcoming elections, it is our hope that we will be stronger, overarching all other considerations as we push forward and with GPL’s mandate to serve Guyana in providing electricity to all.
Hinds also lauded GPL for the initiative in their Diwali celebrations on Friday.
The GPL Diwali programme commenced at 15:30 hrs with prayers, the signifance of Diwali, tabla recital, and cultural display all by employees with the guest appearance of Miss 2011 Sari Queen.

Also making remarks was GPL Chief Executive Director, Bharrat Dindyal, who said that the power company does not only embrace Diwali but also a number of festivals which forms part of their annual events celebrated.
He stated that this year GPL would be sponsoring prizes for the motorcades and it is his hope that the gathering would be more enlightened about Diwali celebrations before they leave the ceremony on Friday.
