I WANT to know what is really happening with some people. I read in the press that a man was charged with hitting his girlfriend with a spade (simply) because of a misunderstanding between the two of them. He was then placed on $40,000 bail after he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry. Now, this is like a joke to me. The feral nature of man, specifically here referring to these bullies, must be curbed. I guess at this rate Guyana will soon be without women.
Irrespective of the details, and I mean here that, even if a woman is unfaithful to a man, there is no reason she should be hit.
According to the report in the press, the two parties involved live together, and on the day in question they had a misunderstanding, and therefore, I guess by virtue of ‘culture’ the man became annoyed (I mean like he was supposed to) and picked up a spade and dealt the lady several lashes about her body.
Now, I had to read this story twice. And yes, it is true. So I guess he will be fined and then all will be well. This should never be.
Dear Editor, I propose that any man hitting a woman be made into a public example. He should be mandated to a special kind of temporary exposure and embarrassment. I suggest that after paying a fine and serving a prison term, maybe he should be tagged. There can be like the wearing of a padlocked chain on the neck or feet. The point is that he must be humiliated. This is what he did to the woman in the first place, apart from the physical effect.
I call on every single Guyanese to force the issue. It is about time that men ‘get their act together.’ If they like hitting, then force them to become sparring partners for boxers and karatekas. I hope desperately that some changes be made.
In closing, I remind the public that Ms. Priya Manickchand is doing her utmost to help the women who are in this kind of situation. However, all the parties involved, especially the women, must expose this crime.
