Chief Justice directs dissatisfied election group to serve application on defendants

A GROUP known as the Guyana National Council on Public Policy (GNCPP), said to be organized by Dr. Philip H. Mozart Thomas and including the Guyana Trades Union Congress among other entities, has approached the High Court, seeking an injunction to  restrain  the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) from holding elections until certain demands are met. Acting Chief Justice Ian Chang, to whom the ex-parte application was made, did not grant the injunction but ordered that “there be service of the application on all the defendants.”
The matter is returnable for October 24, 2011 at 1.30 pm before the Chief Justice.
On that day the matter will be made inter partes, and the defendants are expected to appear in court by virtue of the application.
Apart from Dr. Thomas and the GNCPP, the plaintiffs include the Guyana Trades Union Congress; an Inter-faith Group of Concerned Religious Elders;  Andres, Maureen Williams, Mohammad Sadiq and Juste Ramdas.
The named defendants are: the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM);  People’s Progressive Party/Civic;  People’s National Congress Reform;  The United Force; the Alliance For Change;  Guyana Action Party/Rise Organise And Rebuild (GAP); A Partnership For National Unity (APNU);  Justice For All Party;   the Working People’s Alliance, and the Guyana People’s Partnership (GPP).
