HAMILTON, Bermuda, (CMC) – Bermuda coach Devarr Boyles was over the moon while his opposite number, German Otto Pfister said there was no need to “press the panic button just yet” after the home side stunned regional powerhouses Trinidad and Tobago on Friday night to keep their World Cup qualification hopes alive.
Bermuda scored early in the second half through Antwan Russell and Nahki Wells before Kevin Molino pulled a goal back in the last 10 minutes.
The hosts now face CONCACAF Group B leaders Guyana – 3-0 winners over Barbados on Friday night – here on Tuesday night knowing they need another victory after losing to Trinidad and Tobago’s Soca Warriors and Guyana on the road last month.
“We’re over the moon, this is big, this is new ground for us. I’m pleased for the boys, this is a great result for us and it sets us up nicely,” Boyles said.
“Now it’s just a matter of us being disciplined tonight, tomorrow, and Monday in preparation for Tuesday.”
He added: “It’s very rewarding. We felt that on the balance of the play we deserved it, so all credit to us. Trinidad are very powerful and it was a good game.”
The 2-1 scoreline, watched by 3 000 spectators at the National Sports Centre here, was a repeat of another famous Bermuda win over the Soca Warriors in a World Cup qualifier in Port of Spain three years ago before Trinidad and Tobago turned the tables here in the second leg, triumphing 2-0 to knock out the hosts.
A disgruntled Pfister bemoaned the fact he was missing five players from the home leg – including match winner Kenwyne Jones through injury – but said: “I’m not pressing the panic button just yet.”
“I think this Bermuda team played a very good game and we were not 100 per cent concentrating,” he said.
“Okay, I know I look for sorry (excuses) or something but we have three key players who don’t play today, and three players who play the first time with me in a game.
“I don’t see them in a game before, Devorn Jorsling, Osei Telesford and (Kevin) Molino, it was difficult for the co-ordination. We sleep in the first half and I was only happy with the last 20 minutes when we pressed which was our plan from the beginning.
“Football, you have three possibilities, you draw, you win, or you lose. Today we lost … and we have to try in three days to win again.”
The Soca Warriors now trail Guyana by three points and host Barbados next Tuesday.
Bermuda skipper Khano Smith said his side should rightly celebrate their win over Trinidad and Tobago but warned the victory would mean nothing if they did not beat Guyana on Tuesday.
Another victory would leave Bermuda needing back-to-back wins over Barbados to stand any chance of progressing from the group stage and Smith wants to make sure Friday’s famous win is not wasted.
“We have to take this one and bank it because if we don’t win on Tuesday then this means nothing,” said Smith. “We still have to come and do a job, we have to temper our celebrations.
“Yes, we enjoy it tonight but after that we have to move on because there is another big job coming up on Tuesday. Guyana beat us, so they are a very good team as well.
“So we need to win Tuesday to give ourselves any chance, just like we did tonight.”
