THOUGH the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) of Georgetown continues to assure citizens that garbage contractors are on the job, a significant number of residents across Georgetown are complaining about non-collection of garbage in their respective communities. It is for this reason that M&CC Public Relations Officer Royston King has promised to give an in-depth report on the situation by Friday, after consulting with officers of the council and garbage contractors.
King told the Guyana Chronicle yesterday that as far as he was aware, the council is dealing with several issues surrounding the Haags Bosch Landfill Site, aback Eccles, on the East Bank Demerara.
The ‘rhythm of collection’ is being interrupted by issues such as the extra distance from Georgetown to Haags Bosch, the waiting time at the landfill site, and the fact that it closes at 17:00hrs.
There is no garbage collection in certain parts of the city and hence heaps can be seen mounting at various street corners and on empty lots. Residents have also resorted to burning their rubbish, which poses a severe inconvenience to others.
In addition, it has been observed that some are paying ‘junkies’ to pick up the garbage and dump it at a location of their choice.
Meanwhile, the M&CC in a statement recently, claimed that there will be new days for garbage collection in areas such as Queenstown, Alberttown, Kingston, South and North Cummingsburg.
The statement said effective Monday last; refuse would be collected on Mondays in the Queenstown Area, while it would be done on Tuesdays in Alberttown and Kingston. Collection will be made on Wednesdays in South Cummingsburg and Fridays in North Cummingsburg.
The cash-strapped council urged residents to properly store their bulky refuse that would include household appliances and old furniture. These would only be collected on the last collection day of every month in the respective wards, the statement said.
