SHONDELL Mansfield, 24, was refused bail yesterday on a charge of trafficking in cannabis (marijuana).
The defendant (no address given) appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and pleaded not guilty to the offence, particulars of which stated that, on September 30, she had 418 grammes of the illegal substance for the purpose.
Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey, prosecuting, said, on receipt of certain information, ranks went to the woman’s home and a search, conducted in her presence, revealed the substance in her wardrobe.
Attorney-at-law Mr. Mohammed Zaffar, representing the defendant, requested bail on special circumstances, stating that the woman has a medical condition and is not in the best of health to be at New Amsterdam Prison.
The lawyer also said Mansfield is not the only person who occupies the room in which narcotic was found.
However, the magistrate pointed out that bail is granted on special reasons relating to the offence and not the offender.
The defendant was then remanded to prison until October 18. (Nathalene DeFrietas)
