Smith stars as NSW

beat Mumbai  Indians
STEVEN Smith made a superb 45 not out to see New South Wales to a low-scoring Champions League win over Mumbai Indians on a difficult pitch in Chennai.
Mumbai were indebted to a responsible 42 not out from James Franklin, made in 51 balls, as they limped to 100 for seven from their 20 overs.
The Australian side lost their top order cheaply but Smith and Ben Rohrer saw them to victory with three overs to spare.
Stuart Clark (two for 15) reduced the Indians to nine for three from 2.1 overs and wickets continued to fall steadily as Franklin fought a lone vigil.
Rajagopal Sathish (14) and Harbhajan Singh (15) added some belated hitting in the closing overs but the former fell to Steve O’Keefe (two for 18) and Harbhajan sacrificed himself to a run-out from the penultimate ball to allow Franklin to hit a two and bring up three figures.
New South Wales took seven from the first over but lost openers Shane Watson and David Warner in the second from Abu Nechim (three for 23), Warner hitting his first three balls for fours and his fourth straight to Harbhajan at short extra cover.
Simon Katich, Daniel Smith and Moises Henriques soon followed to leave NSW 28 for five with all their frontline batsmen back in the hutch, but Smith took responsibility for the rebuilding job.
The Australia international scored just one from his first 14 balls but made 45 from 47 as he and Rohrer, with 26no from 28, put on an unbroken 73. (PA Sport)
