A MOTOR vehicle transporting a group of Muslims to a function at Belmonte, on the West Coast Berbice, crashed into a utility pole at Airy Hall, Mahaicony, just after 10:00hrs yesterday, killing two persons on the spot, and seriously injuring six others. Those killed in the accident are Colin Williams 15, of Sandy Babb Street, Kitty, and Raheem Xavier, 13, of Calendar Street, Albouystown. They were pronounced dead on arrival at the Mahaicony Hospital.
Those injured and admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital, after being initially treated at the Mahaicony Hospital are Ameer Alli, 19, of the Good Hope Masjid, East Coast Demerara; Shameer Alli, 10, also of Good Hope, East Coast Demerara; Zaheer Yasseen 13, of 232 Lusignan Grass Field; Fazal Ali 10; Mohamed Shahabudeen 40 and Asif Hack of Turkeyen, East Coast Demerara.
They were admitted suffering varying degrees of injuries, some of which are life-threatening.
One of injured men, Raymond Azeez, Marketing Manager of the National Communications Network, was treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital and sent home.
Two of the injured, including 10-year-old Fazal Ali, were said to be in critical condition and had to be placed on life support in the Intensive Care Unit at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Ameer Ali, of the Good Hope Masjid, was also in a critical condition, and was hurriedly taken to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital to have a CT-scan done.
And 13-year-old old Zahir Yasseen,who suffered fractured ribs and a fractured collar bone, was admitted to the male accident ward.
Meanwhile, driver of the motor vehicle, 34-year-old Asif Hack, was also admitted to the male accident ward of the GPH, in a critical condition, having suffered injuries to the neck and fitted with a neck brace.
Many of the relatives of the injured and friends of the driver remained mum and refused to speak with the media. However, one of the injured who managed to speak in a faint voice, recalled that as the vehicle was at Airy Hall, Mahaicony, the driver attempted to negotiate a sharp bend, ran off the road and crashed into a utility pole, causing the occupants of the back seat to be violently flung out of the vehicle.
