SHAWN Fraser has been charged with unlawfully and maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm on Shelly Norton last March 11. He appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday and pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey, prosecuting, objected to bail and informed the Court that Police had a difficult time in locating the defendant.
But the magistrate granted the application of Defence Counsel K. Juman-Yassin and placed Fraser on $200,000 bail.
The prosecutor said the defendant and virtual complainant shared an intimate relationship and they were drinking when Fraser invited Norton to his home and demanded to have sex with her and because she refused he chopped her several times about her body with a cutlass.
The lawyer said he had to send a letter to the virtual complainant restraining her from visiting Fraser’s home. The prosecutor said, since the incident the defendant went into hiding and a sting operation had to be set up to capture him.
However, the lawyer said since then the woman was paid $150,000 as compensation but because she recently saw Fraser in the company of his children’s mother she became annoyed and contacted the police to arrest the defendant.
The case will be called again on October 3.
