PUSHCART vending has for years been a popular form of retailing music CDs in the busy streets of the capital but concerns about noise nuisance and efforts by the police to curb such nuisance prompted a meeting with President Bharrat Jagdeo and the vendors yesterday. A group of 25 pushcart vendors met the Head of State at the Office of the President yesterday, in the company of Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee and Minister of Transport and Hydraulics Robeson Benn, to arrive at a compromise on ‘toning down’.
Minimizing the size of amplifiers and strict monitoring of the pushcarts were also among the suite of measures that the vendors found welcoming. They however, conveyed their dismay at what they described as a ‘fight down’ by the law enforcement authorities.
One vendor, Akim Smith, told the Government Information Agency (GINA) that yesterday’s meeting with President Jagdeo was mainly to argue the case for respect for the work of pushcart vendors.
A subsequent meeting is scheduled for the next two weeks.
