National Competitiveness Summit to be held Thursday
– at GICC under the theme ‘Partnering to promote economic growth and development’
THE National Competitiveness Council (NCC), in collaboration with the private sector, will be holding the 2011 National Competitiveness Summit on Thursday from 9:15 hrs at the Guyana International Conference Centre under the theme, ‘Partnering to promote economic growth and development’.
The opening session will be addressed by Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Manniram Prashad, subject minister responsible for the implementation of the National Competitiveness Strategy.
According to an advisory from the NCC, there will be two other presentations – ‘Development of human resources in a globally competitive environment’ by Mr. Carvil Duncan, President – Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Guyana, and ‘The Competitiveness Challenge for Developing States’ by Mr. Ramesh Dookhoo, Chairman of the Private Sector Commission.
The feature address will be given by His Excellency President Bharrat Jagdeo, Chairman of the National Competitiveness Council.
Thereafter, there will be a ‘break-out’ session where participants will be split into 5 (five) groups along with specially appointed ministers of Government and technical facilitators of the Government and the private sector, to discuss strategic areas of development such as Trade Strategy and Export Promotion Zones, Manufacturing, Small Business Development, Tourism and other Services, Agro Processing, Forestry, Infrastructure, Alternative Energy and Technology. The Lead Facilitator of each group will be a member of the private sector and will be tasked with making a formal presentation which summarizes the discussions of his respective group.
The National Competitiveness Strategy was launched in May 2006 at the Presidential Summit on Private Sector Development, following an extensive collaborative partnership between the Government of Guyana and the private sector.
As part of the strategy, the National Competitiveness Council (NCC) was established under the Chairmanship of President Jagdeo to take ownership of the NCS and act as a central point of policy leadership to ensure ongoing strategy development and implementation.
The NCC is therefore Guyana’s highest level public-private advisory council and provides strategic advice to the Government on economic development and competitiveness.
The last private sector Summit was held under the theme ‘Turning words into action’ and was the first public-private Summit of its kind. This Summit will address major global and domestic developments that have taken place during that period that will have implications for Guyana’s competitiveness on the world stage.
