THE Government of Guyana has distributed more lands at Sinki and Warapana in the Upper Pomeroon River to boost the national Grow More Food drive. Region 2 Chairman, Ali Baksh, said more than 100 farmers were given the opportunity to choose their plot by randomly selecting a number from a bag.
According to the chairman, the process to select individual plot is a transparent one and the farmers were pleased at the end of the exercise held at the Charity Marketing Centre on Monday.
Mr. Baksh said the fertile farm lands are distributed given in ten acre plots to farmers, especially those affected by flooding during high tides in the lower Pomeroon River.
Mr. Baksh said the government, through the Ministry of Agriculture, had spent millions of dollars to conduct a Cadastral survey, and developed the area.
The chairman told farmers that the Ministry of Agriculture, in collaboration with the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority, is currently desilting and cleaning the Sinki Creek so farmers can transport their produce easily to the Charity Marketing Centre.
Mr. Baksh called on farmers to put the fertile lands under immediate cultivation, and to plant crops such as coconut and coffee which have high demands on the international market.
Farmers who have received farm lands said they are very thankful to the PPP/C Government for opening up new lands to boost agriculture production and to assist them to have a better life.
