A ‘breath of fresh air’ is always welcome, and I did get that. The article: “North West Adventist Churches Assist Community Children” really spurred me to want to always help and be a better person. According to the ‘nice story,’ “several Seventh- day Adventist churches, in the North West District of Region One, pooled their resources to outfit ten children, for the recently reopened school term.” This is really commendable. It shows that goodwill must be wisely directed too. Children are always a good choice when it comes to making an input. So kudos for the Port Kaituma Adventist Church.
The contribution of $10,000 each, to five children, will go a long way, not necessarily in the physical sense, but in terms of motivation. The money was donated for the purchase of school resources. The act was not solitary, as another church in Mabaruma distributed school supplies to five children. This is a classic case of ‘good bringing more good. ‘What is important to note here as well is the fact that education means involvement for all. This has been one of the thrusts of the Ministry of Education. The time spent, personnel paid, and effort expanded demand that education be taken very seriously. So all can truly become stake holders: adults, parents and churches. The idea of the community at large, taking an active role is very likely to result in education being capitalized upon here in Guyana. Education is free, but it comes with a great sacrifice.
In closing, I suggest that support from the general citizenry be shown in other areas. Currently, the Ministry of Education is on a truancy campaign. And since education is costly, innocent children, who are not old enough to comprehend its value, must be ‘gently forced’ to stay with it. They are likely to ‘drop out.’ So yes, give those who are in schools a ‘book or two.’ However, help education in Guyana, by making an attempt to curb truancy.
