GUYANA’s top distance runners Cleveland Forde and Alika Morgan won the men’s and women’s title respectively at the second annual Neal and Massy 10Km athletic road race and 5Km Health Walk held yesterday on the East Bank of Demerara. The race started at Associated Industries Ltd. (AINLIM) head office at Ruimveldt, preceded to Providence before returning to AINLIM for the finish.
Forde and Morgan were both winners at the inaugural tournament in 2010 but this year Forde faced stiff opposition from junior athlete Nathaniel Giddings of Linden who led the runners for most the race before being over taken by Forde at Banks DIH turn at Houston.
Forde finished in a time of 34 minutes 24 seconds while the barefooted Giddings clocked 34:36 to win the Junior category and placed second overall.
Second in the senior men’s category was Dennis Horatio in a time of 35:30 while third place went to Cleveland Thomas (35:48).
Second in the boys division was Chavez Sital in a time of 37:16 while third place went to Kevin Bayley in 37:46.
Morgan’s winning time was 41 minutes 56 seconds with Ashanti Scott securing the second position at 43:22 and Eva Harry third (47:44).
Javina Straker was first in the girls’ junior category in 46:06 followed by Adama Roberts in 46:41 and Shanice Hutton 48:03 third.
Lleweyn Gardner was the first Master to cross the finishing line followed by Maurice Julian and Siles Brummell.
National sprint queen Alisha Fortune was the first ladies vets division beating into second place former national middle distance athlete Lorri-Ann Adams.
The top performers were presented the trophies cash prizes and a bottle of non-alcoholic champagne.
Chief Executive Officer of Neal and Massy Guyana Group Deo Persaud expressed satisfaction with the turnout of athletes and walkers for the race and indicated that the local conglomerate will sponsor the event again next year.
President of the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) Colin Boyce lauded Neal and Massy for sponsoring the event.
Boyce said after next year’s event, the AAG and Neal and Massy will be looking to invite employees from Neal and Massy in other Caribbean countries.
Hampers were presented to several athletes as well as officials of the AAG and staff of Neal and Massy.
