TEAM Guyana retuned from Barbados with one victory after lightweight boxer Stefan Gouveia defeated the best the Land of the Flying Fish had to offer, when the Amateur Boxing Association of Barbados held an international card at the Springer Memorial Auditorium in St Michael last Saturday. Gouveia, who is sponsored by Seon Bristol, beat Barbadian Cobia Breedy 2-1. Breedy is scheduled to represent Barbados at the upcoming Pan Am Games and according to manager of the Guyana team Eustace Cuffy, Breedy had a hard time keeping off Gouveia.
The manager said that Gouveia gave an awesome display of skilful aggression which left the hometown crowd quiet even though he arrived on the island less than four hours before the fight.
However, the other two Guyanese boxers who travelled to the competition were not as lucky. Middleweight Laured Stewart and female middleweight Simone Hoyte, were both defeated.
Hoyte lost to Kimberley Gittens via decision while Stewart was defeated by Leonard Harewood. Team Guyana comprised the three boxers, manager Cuffy, coach Carl Franklyn and referee/judge Ramona Agard.
The team returned home yesterday morning.
