THE Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Guyana HIV/AIDS Reduction and Prevention Project (GHARP II), Monday, presented a stigma and discrimination plaque and suggestion box to the National Care and Treatment Center (NCTC), Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. The ministry, recognizing that stigma and discrimination prevent persons from accessing care and treatment services, has committed to creating an environment free from prejudice, regardless of the age, creed, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation of those seeking services. Thus far, it has implemented a policy statement against Stigma and Discrimination and Code of Ethics in the health sector, whether private or public.
Mission Director-USAID Guyana, Ms. Carol Horning, stated that she has worked all over the world, and Guyana is the first country where she has ever been where the policy against discrimination and stigma will become a permanent feature of the clinic at which the services are provided.
Health Minister Dr Leslie Ramsammy said there is absolutely no reason for anyone to shun persons living with HIV/AIDS when society can work, live and play alongside persons living with HIV.
The policy statement launched against Stigma and Discrimination and Code of Ethics includes objectives such as protecting any member of society from discrimination when accessing health services, and providing an educational system where persons will be enlightened on the issue of stigma and discrimination.
