THE Queenstown-based Demerara Cricket Club (DCC), home of West Indies legends such as Clive Lloyd and Lance Gibbs, yesterday commenced its second annual two-week cricket camp under the guidance of head coach and former national off-spinner Gavin Nedd. In his brief remarks, the club’s president Alfred Mentore charged those in attendance including the lone female, to soak up all information taught to them by the coach and his assistants, while highlighting the success story of last year’s camp.
“This camp is the second of its kind by us here at DCC, coming on the back of a successful camp which was held for the first time last year and I hope you soak up like a sponge, whatever is taught to you by the coach and those who will be assisting him over the next two weeks, using this camp as a golden opportunity to launch your individual cricket careers,” said Mentore.
He added, “When we looked at the results from last year’s clinic, which shows the club’s Under-13 team carting off two Georgetown Cricket Association-sponsored Under-13 tournaments and one Under-15 competition, certainly we had to do it again this year.
Our intention at DCC is to produce more cricketers not only for Guyana, but the West Indies at large, having done so in the past through Clive Lloyd, Lance Gibbs, Travis Dowlin, Christopher Barnwell, Derwin Christian, Trevon Griffith and even your coach for the next two weeks, Gavin Nedd.”
Alfred cautioned the participants to be disciplined, to stay away from drugs and remain in school, saying ‘Education is the key to success at all times’ for which he received a round of applause from the participants.
“In recognition of the hard work and success that was displayed by the club’s Under-13 team who won the two GCA tournaments and the Under-15 team who was also successful in a GCA tournament, a cocktail reception would be held next Friday right here at DCC.”
In outlining the programme for the two- week clinic, the 38-year-old Nedd said the first week will cater to the needs of Under-13 and U-15 cricketers, while the second and final week will see Under-17 and U-19 cricketers go through their paces.
Topics such as Laws of the Game, Discipline, Field Setting, Shots and Shots selection, Batting Stance, Food and Nutrition, Drugs and HIV/AIDS Awareness, amongst others, will be dealth with over the next two weeks, at the end of which Certificates of Participation will be issued to the participants.
