GYO, PSC join GCC in second round of Queensway Cup

GANDHI Youth Organisation (GYO) and Police Sports Club (PSC) joined first-day winners Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) in the second round of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA)-organised, Queensway-sponsored 50 overs cricket tournament, following commanding victories yesterday. Playing at the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) ground, GYO turned back the challenge of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) to come away with a four-wicket victory, while PSC defeated Muslim Youth Organisation Vikings by 167 runs in a rain-reduced encounter.
Batting first at the DCC ground in Lance Gibbs Street, GDF were bowled out for 121 from 28 overs, with national U-19 wicketkeeper/batsman Kevon Boodie leading the way with 30 while Marcus Watkins and Shemroy Barrington offered support with 26 and 22 respectively.
Shaheid Mohammed took 4 for 5 and Shiveshwar Sankar 2 for 3 for GYO, who reached 124 for 6 from 30 overs in reply, with Mohammed leading their response with 46, while Kumar Singh contributed 26 against the bowling of Randy Lindore who took 3 for 24 for GDF.
At the PSC ground, PSC batted first and made an imposing 309 for 8 from their 43 overs in a rain-reduced encounter, with Jason Heyliger, Vishal Jaigobin and Pernell London contributing 46, 45 and 43 runs respectively, while Trevor Francis took 3 for 54 for Vikings.
Asked to score 243 from 30 overs on the Duckworth/Lewis System following another rain interruption during the break, Vikings found the bowling of Trevor Benn, who took 3 for 22 along with Heyliger 2 for 4 and Rodwayne Warde 2 for 23, too much to handle and were bowled out for 76 from 19.3 overs, with Francis top-scoring with 17 while Abdool Kumar made 16 for Vikings.
The action continues today with two more first-round matches featuring Transport Sports Club and DCC at DCC, while Malteenoes Sports Club and Third Class will face off at PSC. The action is set to bowl off at 09:30hrs. (Calvin Roberts)
