Ahead of 66th birthday…

Watchman murdered first night at construction site
OTHER employees at a Providence Public Road, East Bank Demerara construction site, yesterday morning, discovered that the night watchman was murdered and a generator, among other things, missing from a storage container.
The bloodied and battered body of security guard Mohammed Haniff, 65, of Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo, was found next to some cement, covered under a shed, about 06:45 hrs.
Workers at the location told the Guyana Chronicle that they arrived for work, at the location where a building is being erected by Mines Services Limited and thought it strange that Haniff was not around, although his cigarettes, food bowl, bag and footwear were at the scene.
It was during a search of the place that his corpse was sighted under tarpaulin below a shed. They notified the police and relatives of the deceased who arrived.
The workmen, who made the discovery, said Haniff had been beaten to death, apparently, after putting up a fight, because his face and hands were badly damaged.
A hammer and a piece of iron, believed to be the murder weapons, were near the corpse.
It is suspected that Haniff was confronted by bandits, who killed him and broke into the container from which they carted off booty.

The same container had been broken into previously, last Saturday night, when several construction tools were also stolen from it at the site where building work started three months ago.
The dead man’s sister, Joycelyn Griffith said she got a call from her sibling’s employer, stating that he was murdered at the work site and she hurried there after informing other relatives, who accompanied her.
She said she last saw him alive over the weekend but he resides with his daughter and it was his first night on the job at that location.
The father of two was employed with a private security service and would have celebrated his 66th birthday next month.
