THE Mayor and City Council is at that point again! The newspapers of August 11 reported on the amount of funds Government has had to put in to bail out the City Hall. It is absolutely shameful that Government has to do this so often, but if it does not, then the city dwellers will be inconvenienced, with garbage piling up in places making for unsightly and unclean streets, and people’s health put at risk. Government has had to bail out the City council with $215M, while another $450M is being spent on city roads. What does this say for the management of the Council? It just serves to show, time and again, that the Mayor and his officers cannot manage the city’s funds and, which is an embarrassment to the entire council.
I commend the new Minister of Local Government Norman Whittaker for strengthening Government’s commitment to hold elections as early as possible, because this city is in dire need of new management so that residents are not inconvenienced as is the hallmark of the current council.
I also think that, in the meantime, the Government should do whatever is necessary to have an Interim Management Committee installed to handle the affairs of the city.
