T&T claim second victory; Jamaica, Barbados, St Lucia also win

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) – Reigning champions Trinidad & Tobago collected their second straight victory in the WICB Regional Women’s One-day Championship with a six-wicket win over Guyana on Tuesday. Amanda Samaroo hit the top score of 36, and T&T and West Indies Women captain Merissa Aguilleira supported with 23, as T&T successfully chased 103 for victory, reaching their target with 155 balls to spare in the second round match at Kensington Oval.
Erva Giddings took two for 17 for Guyana, and her captain and West Indies Women’s all-rounder Shemaine Campbelle snared two for 29.
T&T and West Indies Women vice-captain Anisa Mohammed took three for nine with her off–spin, Alisa Mohammed captured two for three, and Gaitri Seetahal two for 16, as Guyana, sent in to bat, were dismissed for 102 in 42.5 overs.
Campbelle led the way with 30, and June Ogle-Thomas made 22.
At the Pine Basin, a memorable spell of bowling from West Indies Women all-rounder Shanel Daley put Jamaica on the road for a nine-wicket victory over Grenada.
Daley, the daughter of former Jamaica men’s all-rounder Aaron Daley, grabbed eight for seven from 7.4 overs, as Grenada were dismissed for 47 in 22.4 overs.
“It feels great – really good to come out and do so well for Jamaica, and contribute to the team’s victory,” said the 22-year-old. “This goes to show that the hard work I have been doing is paying off in a big way.
“The pitch was turning quite a bit, and I was able to bowl with good control and get most of my wickets lbw and bowled down.”
She said: “I never imagined I would take such amazing bowling figures. We needed a win, after the defeat against T&T on Monday, and I’m happy to play my part.
“Overall, I am delighted we won the match, and we will look for more wins in this tournament.”
The 22-year-old Daley has been a regular in the West Indies Women’s team for the last two years, and has appeared in 23 One-day Internationals and 20 Twenty20 Internationals.
Two seasons ago, she switched from left-arm medium-pace to left-arm spin on the advice of West Indies Women’s coach Sherwin Campbell.
West Indies Women batter Stafanie Taylor, the Jamaica captain, then formalised the victory for her side with 33 not out, as they reached 48 for one in 14.1 overs about 25 minutes before the scheduled lunch interval.
At the Brewery, hosts Barbados rebounded from the disappointment of a wash-out in their first game on Monday to get their first victory, when they stopped Dominica by seven wickets in a low-scoring affair.
Keila Elliott was the pick of the Barbados bowlers with five for 25, and Shaquana Quintyne supported with four for 23, as Dominica were dismissed for a modest 73 in 27.3 overs.
Danielle Small then helped race Barbados to 74 for three in 11.4 overs, winning about one minute before the scheduled lunch interval.
In the other match at the Desmond Haynes Oval, St Lucia squeaked by S. Vincent & the Grenadines by 14 runs in another low-scoring affair, reduced to 35 overs-a-side, because of wet conditions.
Verena Felicien was not out on 26, as St Lucia reached 98 for five before Swayline Williams snatched three for five, as SVG were bowled out for 84 in 26.5 overs.
