THE annual Milo 2011 Under-23 football tournament was officially launched yesterday at a simple ceremony in the Conference room of the Beepats building, Regent Street. The tournament, which was initially an event organised by the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) two years ago, will now be run by the executive committee of the Fruta Conquerors Football Club. The ceremony was attended by Nestle’s Brand Manager Selwyn Bobb, president and secretary of the club, Marlan Cole and Lavern Fraser-Thomas along with Marketing Representative of Beepats Nirvani Bhairopersad and Leon Fitzpatrick. In Bobb’s brief remarks he said that Milo is honoured to once again be sponsoring the Under-23 tournament:
“Milo is no stranger to sports because it was a drink developed with young athletes in mind, as a sport supplement.”
“When we hand out sponsorship we like to make it of value so we gladly sponsor these grassroots tournaments which help develop athletes,” Bobb said.
Finally he said, on behalf of his company, that they are very thankful to the FC for picking Beepats to assist in the venture.
Fruta Conquerors Club president Marlan Cole said: “We have a lot of challenges in football in Georgetown and while these challenges present themselves we see that no competitive football is being played. So we thought it best to help out the sport by approaching Beepats to sponsor the tournament.
“We want to make sure we don’t lose our young athletes to the ills of society such as drugs, crime and school dropout so we hope we get the entire support of the football fraternity throughout this tournament.” .
Cole concluded by saying, “Mostly we would like the support of the federation because the decision made by them can affect the sport directly and indirectly.”
The tournament will involve sixteen teams from the Georgetown district which will be divided into four groups and run in a round-robin into knockout stage format.
