New Stelling View Market opening delayed
THE opening of the new Stelling View Bazaar in Stabroek, Georgetown, which was expected to have taken place last month, has been postponed to August 13.
Clerk of Markets, Mr. Schulder Griffith, who made the announcement, said it is mainly because of a few minor setbacks that have affected the project.
“We have some small things to do, as it relates to construction and we are doing them as the money comes in. They will be ready by August 13,” he assured.
Some $50M have been expended on works at the location in the vicinity of Stabroek Market and Georgetown Ferry Stelling. That and the new vendors’ mall, with 184 stalls, were erected with finances from public/private partnerships which became necessary for such purposes.
The project was conceived with the aim of regulating street vending and making accommodation available for vending in a clean and healthy environment.
Griffith said, when the facility is open, people will be able to shop from groceries to gadgets in the refurbished market as opposed to a few years ago.
He said work is being done to enhance the inside of the Stabroek Market showing off a more attractive environment for shopping.
“This is a work in progress. Some has already started and we are now working to bring a new design to the market. All the stalls will have an upper flat and a lower flat, basically a modern design,” Griffith said.
According to him, the idea seeks to bring about a major transformation in Guyana, as it relates to vending.
“We want to make the place in such a way that, when people walk in, it would be like a big mall,” he offered.
Additionally, also under the public/private partnership project for market development, Griffith said it is proposed to raise the stalls at Bourda Green. (Telesha Persaud)
