FORMER student of Dolphin Secondary, 17-year-old Carlos Petterson, emerged winner of the Banks Malta One-day Rapid Chess tournament held on Sunday at the West Demerara Secondary School, Pouderoyen.
Petterson, of Georgetown, who missed a few tournaments for the year, scored seven and a half points (seven wins and one draw) from the nine chess matches played.
He received a tournament size chess set and a Banks Malta travelling bag along with the first place trophy.
He was followed by 12-year-old Tevon Blaize of Charlestown Secondary who was awarded the second place trophy, a tournament-size chess set and a Banks Malta travelling bag also for his performance. Blaize suffered two losses and scored six and a half points (six wins and one draw) after facing off his nine opponents.
Senior player Abdool Karamat secured third place and West Demerara Secondary school student Ganesh Persaud copped fourth. Over a dozen chess sets were presented by Banks Malta Brand Manager Clayton McKenzie to the participants at the end of the tournament.
The Guyana Chess Federation is actively promoting the popular board game and chess sets presented to prizewinners will further boost the expansion of the game.
The tournament saw the participation of chess players mainly from West Demerara. It also attracted a few players from Georgetown.
Banks DIH Communications Manager, Troy Peters, said his company was pleased to be associated with the tournament noting that chess is making rapid strides locally.
Peters said the Federation’s investment in youths is paying off, as reflected in the results of the tournament with the younger players gaining the upper hand over their senior counterparts.
