MINING Week, the annual salute to the mining sector by the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC), will be held from August 21-27, under the theme: “Evolving methods, Embracing excellence, Enjoying Success.’
Culminating with Porkknocker Day at Bartica on August 27, this year’s observances will include a Mining Week walk in Georgetown on August 21, starting from the Bank of Guyana Building and ending at the Girl Guides Pavilion on Brickdam, a three-day mining and quarrying conference, a world energy outlook forum, also in Georgetown, and national mining exhibitions in Georgetown and Bartica.
The conference will include presentations by petroleum industry leaders in Guyana, such as Pepsol- YPF, ExxonMobil; Shell; Tullow, CGX and Takutu Oil and Gas Inc/Canacol.
It will also comprise presentations by top mining companies such as Rusal, Bosai, Guyana Gold Fields, IAMGOLD and Prometheus.
Government agencies such as Office of the Prime Minister, the Environmental Protection Agency(EPA), the GGMC, the Guyana Gold Board, and the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission will also be involved.
The venue will be the Ocean View International Hotel, August 22 and 23.
Challenges in mineral and petroleum exploitation and production will be the theme of the conference.
At the same venue, the Global Energy Outlook forum will feature presentations by EXXON-MOBIL and a Miner’s Outlook by the GGDMA, and other local organizations during the evening of August 22.
At the same venue, there will be two education sessions on August 24, with the topics being exploration fundamentals and the Law and Mining.
Dr. Serge Nadeau, Senior Geologist of the GGMC, will be the resource person for exploration fundamentals, while Ms. Kara Duff, Legal Officer of the GGMC, will lead the discussion on the law and mining.
The Ocean View Convention Centre is also the venue for the mining exhibition in Georgetown, which runs from August 22 to 24, while the mining exhibition at Bartica will be held at First Avenue on August 26.
The Porkknocker Fun Day will be held at the Regatta Pavilion, Golden Beach, Bartica, on  August 27, bringing the curtain down on Mining Week 2011.
