GEORGETOWN, Guyana, (CMC) – Javon Ali helped Trinidad & Tobago make hay while the sun shone, and claim a morale-boosting, eight-wicket victory over reigning champions Windward Islands in the WICB Regional Under-19 Championship yesterday. The left-arm spinner finished with five wickets for 52 runs from 32.1 overs, as the Windwards were dismissed for 159 in their second innings.
Chasing 10 for victory, T&T stumbled, losing two wickets, but reached the finish line at the Guyana National Stadium in the first hour after the lunch interval on the final day of the second round match.
The result gave T&T their first victory of the competition, following a defeat in their first match against Jamaica, pushing them up to 12 points, and condemned the Windwards to their second straight defeat, leaving them at the foot of the table on no points.
T&T face hosts Guyana in the next round at Everest, starting tomorrow, when the Windwards face the Leewards at Bourda Oval.
Windwards, following on 150 behind on first innings, started the day on 59 for four in their second innings.
But there was little substance from their batting, and they were dismissed just after lunch.
Ali did the bulk of the damage, and got great support from off-spinner Idress Mohammed with two for 25 from nine over, and Derone Davis, the other left-arm spinner, took two for 34 from 32 overs, ending the match with seven for 79, and taking his aggregate for the tournament to 12.
The Windwards bats never came to grips with the slow bowling which accounted for 18 of the 20 wickets T&T took in the match.
Night-watchman Ray Jordan showed some fight and made 21, but there was little else to show.
Asked to make 10 to win, T&T lost Kieron Joseph for a duck, when Bronte Bess bowled him in the second over, and three balls later Christian Herrera was caught behind off Jordan for two.
