DR. VISHWAMINTRA Persaud was yesterday refused bail when he appeared before Magistrate Roby Benn at the Blairmont Magistrate’s Court to answer a charge of sexually molesting a 13-year-old girl. The magistrate upheld a request by police prosecutor, Inspector Grace Bristol, for bail to be refused on the grounds that the doctor is a flight risk, and that he could tamper with the witness.
Dr. Persaud first came to prominence here when it was alleged that he had entered a guilty plea on April 18, 2008 for a misdemeanor with a minor in the United States.
The doctor was subsequently sentenced to an eight-year order of protection, along with 10 years of probation and ordered to pay a fine of US$25,500 and other fees and surcharges.
Dr. Persaud is to make another court appearance at the Blairmont Magistrate’s Court on August 3.
